PRELIMINARY ANNOUNCEMENT

We are pleased to announce that the Nuclear Science Division of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory will host the conference "Nuclear Structure 2010" at the Clark-Kerr Campus Conference Center of the University of California at Berkeley, August 8-13, 2010. NS2010 will be the latest in the series of meetings organized every two years by North American National Laboratories. Previous meetings have
be held in Argonne, Berkeley, Chalk River, Oak Ridge, and most recently in East Lansing.

The scientific program will be devoted to the latest research and developments in Nuclear Structure Physics, in particular the properties of nuclei at the extremes of isospin, mass, angular momentum, and excitation energy.

The conference will begin with a reception in the evening of Sunday, August 8th and the formal program will finish on the afternoon of Friday, August 13th, 2010. If you are interested in attending then please reserve these dates. A conference
website will be available shortly and we will send an announcement with more details soon.

ABSTRACT SUBMISSION

The program will consist of plenary presentations from invited speakers and selected contributions from submitted abstracts. Continuing the tradition of this conference, most talks will be selected from the abstracts. Abstracts not
chosen for oral presentation can be presented as a poster. Submitted abstracts will be included in an abstract book.

Instructions for abstract submission and the template can be found at the main conference website:
http://www.lbl.gov/nsd/conferences/nuclearstructure2010/

The deadline for abstract submission is April 16th.

PROCEEDINGS

The conference proceedings will not be formally published. With permission of the presenters, all conference contributions (both talks and posters) will be included on a CD-ROM for distribution to all registered participants.

REGISTRATION

Registration is now open. Please visit the conference website:
http://www.lbl.gov/nsd/conferences/nuclearstructure2010/
to complete your registration. The early registration fee is $450. This rate applies until July 9th. After that date the regular registration fee will be $500. The student registration fee is $350.

ACCOMMODATIONS AND MEALS

The conference will take place at the Clark-Kerr Campus which is close to the center of Berkeley. It is a fully self-contained site which will provide accommodation, meals, and other conference services. A block of rooms has been reserved. Conferees are strongly encouraged to stay on
site, which will be the most cost effective option available for accommodation and meals.

When you register for the conference you will be asked to select a package including either a single room with meals provided ($760) or a double (shared) room with meals providied provided ($560 per person).

Please, do not contact Clark-Kerr directly.

INTERNET ACCESS

There is free internet access at the Clark-Kerr Campus. Around much of the site and the lecture halls there will be a wireless connection. In the bedrooms, you will need to bring an ethernet cable to gain access.

TRAVEL TO THE CONFERENCE

Berkeley is within easy reach of both the San Francisco and Oakland International Airports. Information on getting to and from Berkeley (including maps of the Bay Area) can be found at the Berkeley Lab website:

http://www.lbl.gov/Workplace/Transportation.html

or at the University website:

http://visitors.berkeley.edu/

The Clark-Kerr Campus address is 2601 Warring Street, Berkeley, CA 94720.

Participants bringing a car are advised that parking in Berkeley is not always readily available. There will be some spaces at the Clark-Kerr conference parking lot adjacent to the site ($14/day). It is also possible to purchase a weekly pass ($112), but advance notice is required (by responding
to the question during registration process).

PROBABLE WEATHER CONDITIONS

August is usually a wonderful time of year in the Bay Area. Typical daily highs in Berkeley will likely be around 70F, but it is possible that we have a short period of higher temperatures (it rarely exceeds 90F). The proximity
of the Bay also means the possibility of cool evenings (sometimes dropping as low as 50F).

CONFERENCE SCHEDULE

An opening session to welcome participants will be held on the evening of Sunday, August 8th. Light refreshments will be available. The main program will run from the morning of Monday, August 9th until the afternoon of Friday, August 13th. On Tuesday evening there will be a BBQ dinner during
the poster session. Awards to the poster winner(s) will be presented during a conference dinner on Thursday evening. On Wednesday afternoon we are planning a tour of the National Ignition Facility; please read the information given below concerning the tour.

NIF TOUR

On the afternoon of Wednesday, August 11th, we have arranged a guided walking tour of the National Ignition Facility (NIF) at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL). NIF is the world's largest, and highest energy,
laser facility. This Summer NIF will begin experiments that will focus 192 high-power laser beams on a small target filled with hydrogen fuel. The goal is to fuse the hydrogen nuclei, and produce net energy gain, which is a first step towards Laser Induced Fusion Energy (LIFE).

There is no additional cost associated with the tour. However, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory/National Ignition Facility is a DOE/NNSA national
laboratory and therefore your personal identification information is required to obtain a badge for the tour. If you would like to go on the tour you must register separately from the conference. The LLNL website is:
https://www.regonline.com/nuclear_structure_2010
The link to the site is also available through the main conference web page.

The LLNL/NIF registration deadline for foreign nationals is JUNE 1st, 2010.

The LLNL/NIF registration deadline for U.S. citizens is JULY 1st, 2010.

Please be aware that if you miss these deadlines there will be no possibility of
coming on the tour.
