City of Oakland

Quark Matter 2004 will be held in Oakland, California. Oakland has many attractions and is centrally located in the Bay Area. Berkeley is right next door. San Francisco is just a few minutes away by a BART train or a short trip by ferry. There is easy BART access to the conference hotel from either San Francisco or Oakland Airport.

Quark Matter 2004 - Second Announcement

The 17th International Conference on Ultra-Relativistic Nucleus-Nucleus Collisions will be held in Oakland, California, on January 11-17, 2004. The conference will include a one-day symposium for students on January 11, five days of conference talks, and an option for a half day excursion.

Other services, like excursions and companion program, will be announced soon. Please bring this announcement to the attention of interested colleagues who might not be on our mailing list.

Visa Information

It can be very time consuming for participants from some countries to obtain proper travel papers. Please keep in mind that the visa application process could take up to six months in extreme cases. Apply early! If you need advice or assistance, please contact Lorri StClaire at QM2004@lbl.gov. The conference will provide supporting documentation for visa applications upon request.

Early Registration

The deadline for early registration is September 30, 2003. The fee is $500.00 and will increase to $550.00 on October 1. To register click on "Registration" and follow the directions. The conference dinner is included in the registration fee. You will be able to order additional banquet tickets for companions.

Abstract Submission

If you plan to submit an abstract for presentation, click on "Abstract Submission" and follow the instructions. The International Advisory Committee will select abstracts for oral presentation in the parallel sessions. There will be also a large number of poster presentations. The deadline for abstract submission is now September 30.

Hotel Accommodations

The conference hotel is the Oakland Marriott City Center, situated within the Conference Center Complex. The rates are $126.00 for single or double occupancy. You can make your reservations by contacting the Marriott Hotel at +1-800-991-7249 between 6:00 AM and 11:00 PM PST, or make your reservations online by visiting our hotel web site. Be sure to use group code qmiqmia and reference Quark Matter 2004 when making reservations! We also have reserved a block of rooms in other hotels that are accessible by public transportation. Reservations for these alternative hotels will become available shortly through our hotel web site.

Excursions

The afternoon of Wednesday, January 14, is reserved for excursions. We cannot include excursions in the registration fee. We will announce a link to the web site of the company organizing the excursions for us. We have chosen interesting destinations typical for the area that are focused on the natural beauty of the Bay Area. There are also many attractions in the cities of Oakland and San Francisco you might want to explore on your own. We will be glad to assist you, e.g. with the reservation of tickets for museums like the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.

Companion Program

The companion program will be an interesting mix of guided tours and excursions organized by the company responsible for the excursions. A link and details will become available shortly.

Local Support

Limited support for local expenses will be available to scientists who are in the early stage of their careers. To apply, please send a brief statement of research and a letter of reference by October 15 to:

Should we be unable to fund your request, you still will qualify for the early registration fee.
