Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy Open Funding Opportunity

For the fourth time in its history, the Department of Energy’s Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E) has announced a broad funding opportunity for proposals from “potentially disruptive technologies across the full spectrum of energy applications.” OPEN 2018 encourages proposals of up to $10M for new and emerging areas.

ARPA-E has a special mandate to develop high-risk, potentially deployable energy technologies that bridge the gap between basic science and applied technology. Since its inception in 2009, LBNL researchers have received ARPA-E awards alone or in partnership with industry and academic institutions. This is a rare opportunity to propose research that reaches beyond existing ARPA-E programs.

This opportunity covers a broad range of potential technologies and applications that span nearly all of the research occurring at Berkeley Lab. Potential applicants are encouraged to consult the POCs in their Areas for guidance and resources. Applicants are urged to carefully read the Lab’s policy for cost share well in advance of submitting a full proposal.

KEY DATES:

Lab leadership is asking for PIs (prime, or partner) to submit a brief synopsis of their concept papers to their Area POC by February 5, 2018. These synopses will be used to understand the breadth of projects proposed for this solicitation, the potential cost share obligations, and what resources will be needed. These documents are for internal review only; they will not be submitted to ARPA-E.
