and University of California.
he Seventh Workshop on Advanced Accelerator Concepts will be held from October 12 to October 18, 1996 in the Granlibakken Conference Center at Lake Tahoe, California, USA. This series started in the early 1980s. The last two workshops were held at the Abbey at Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, USA in 1994 and at Port Jefferson in Long Island, New York, USA in 1992. The 1996 workshop will be sponsored, as per tradition, by the U.S. Department of Energy (High Energy Physics Division, Advanced Technology Branch). Also sponsoring the workshop are the Center for Beam Physics at Ernest Orlando Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) and the University of California. The program will consist of a set of invited talks throughout the week, solicited from international experts and recommended by the Advisory and Program Committee. These talks will fill the plenary sessions--taking the entire first day of the workshop, and consisting of one or two per day thereafter. The last day of the workshop will be devoted to the presentation of the Working Group summaries. The rest of the workshop time will be spent in working-group discussions (seven in all), spontaneous group discussions, and poster presentations. The posters will be exhibited the entire time of the workshop, with perhaps one rotation of posters. There will be an informal reception upon arrival, a free afternoon of tours, a Boating Excursion, and a Workshop Banquet.
The Registration and Housing forms are available in rtf format for downloading. Please mail or fax your registration and housing information to the Workshop Coordinator
he workshop will be limited to 150 participants. Participation is by invitation only, and we have encouraged students and junior colleagues active in the fields of accelerators, lasers, plasmas and particle/photon beam physics and technology to apply. The composition of workshop participants is expected to reflect a balance of various fields, institutions, students, colleagues, experts, national laboratories, and key international figures. To ensure your participation at the Workshop, you must register by September 6, 1996.

he Advanced Accelerator Concepts workshop is the only acknowledged and fully sponsored forum that provides a platform for inter- and cross-disciplinary discussions on various aspects of advanced accelerator and beam physics/technology concepts covering a wide range of applications--from High Energy Colliders to Synchrotron Radiation Sources. The wide scope of the workshop includes new methods of particle acceleration to high energies, techniques for production of ultrahigh gradient electromagnetic fields in the laboratory, diagnostics and control of particle/photon beams to ultrashort dimensions and ultrafast time scales, and various energy and beam sources. Of special note is the fact that this is the first Advanced Accelerator Concepts workshop following the demise of the Superconducting Super Collider (SSC). Therefore, the workshop achievements and proceedings will be crucial in directing the future of accelerator- and beam-based science world wide.
- Nonconventional Collider Concepts
- Laser-powered Acceleration in Media and in Free Space with Boundaries
- Femtosecond, THz and Nanometer Beam Control
- Beam Monitoring and Conditioning
- Novel Particle Beam Sources
- Lasers and Microwave Power Sources
- Compact Accelerator Components
- Alternative Luminosity Paradigms
An exhibition of various commercial and prototype laser, microwave and electronic data-acquisition systems, relevant to particle accelerators and beam physics/technology, is planned during the workshop.

he workshop will be held at the Granlibakken Conference Center, located on the North Shore of Lake Tahoe in the Sierra Nevada mountain range. Participants will enjoy the magnificent mountains of the High Sierra and the scenic beauty of the largest alpine lake in North America. All Workshop functions will be held at Granlibakken. The Center is located in its own private valley, just a short mile from Lake Tahoe's beautiful North Shore, and features six championship tennis courts, a swimming pool, saunas, and a spa. Accommodations have been arranged at Granlibakken's condominium units (private bedrooms and bath; shared living areas) and its new executive lodge (standard hotel rooms). All meeting functions will be held at the Conference Center. Information about package prices (housing and meals) are in the Advanced Registration form included with this announcement.
he Workshop Registration Form and the Granlibakken Housing Form are available for downloading in rtf format. The registration fee of $280.00 (U.S.) covers admission to all oral and poster sessions, proceedings, meeting materials, the banquet, and coffee breaks. Be sure to complete all information on both forms. It is important to indicate your choice of publishing format and working group on the Registration Form.
October weather at Lake Tahoe is unpredictable and can range from very cool evenings to warm daytime temperatures. Comfortable clothing is suggested, and you should bring a warm jacket. Walking shoes are recommended.

The Reno Cannon International Airport serves the Lake Tahoe area. Direct and connecting flights from San Francisco and other major U.S. cities are available. Participants flying into the Bay Area can also rent a car and drive directly Granlibakken in about four hours.Granlibakken Conference Center is a 50-minute drive from the Reno Cannon Airport. Granlibakken offers shuttle services from the airport at a cost of $25.00 per person each way. Other shuttle services are available from AeroTrans (702-786-2376) and No Stress Express (800-426-5644), both located in the Reno Cannon Airport. Individuals should contact these vendors directly. Advance reservations are suggested.
By Automobile
From the Bay Area. Take Interstate 80 east from the Bay Area (ask for map and/or directions from car rental agency).
