Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy Open Funding Opportunity
Do you have an exciting, transformational technology that could rapidly remake the U.S. energy landscape?
For the third time in its history, the Department of Energy’s Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E) has announced a broad funding opportunity for proposals from “potentially disruptive technologies across the full spectrum of energy applications.” OPEN 2015 encourages proposals of up to $10M for new and emerging areas.
ARPA-E has a special mandate to develop high-risk, potentially deployable energy technologies that bridge the gap between basic science and applied technology. Since its inception in 2009, LBNL researchers have received ARPA-E awards alone or in partnership with industry and academic institutions. This is a rare opportunity to propose research that reaches beyond existing ARPA-E programs.
An informational Town Hall was held on Monday, January 26, where Energy Technologies ALD R. Ramesh, along with Ilan Gur, former ARPA-E program manager and current director of Cyclotron Road, discussed the opportunity and strategies for success with past ARPA-E awardees. You may view the recorded session here, or access it anytime by selecting the ARPA-E Townhall tab.
This opportunity covers a broad range of potential technologies and applications that span nearly all of the research occurring at Berkeley Lab, and because of this, the lab will be working with the Areas to provide guidance and resources that will enable applicants to be successful. Additionally, the Lab is tracking cost share obligations that may result from this solicitation. The cost share requirements for this FOA are substantially different from the previous opportunity and the lab anticipates providing 5% cost share for the LBNL portion of successful applications.
Lab leadership is asking for PIs (prime, or partner) to submit a brief synopsis of their Concept Papers to their Area POC by February 4, 2015. These synopses will be used to understand the breadth of projects proposed for this solicitation, the potential cost share obligations, and what resources will be needed to support applicants during the process. These documents are for internal review only; they will not be submitted to ARPA-E.
To be considered for funding, a Notice of Intent must be submitted through ARPA-E eXCHANGE by February 20, 2015 (5:00 PM ET).
