Lab Mentors Needed
For Summer Students

The Lab’s Center for Science and Engineering Education (CSEE) is gearing up for summer with a request for volunteers to serve as Lab mentors for their undergraduate, high school student, and teacher programs. Scientists and engineers who are interested in working with students or teachers should e-mail csee@lbl.gov or call x5511. In addition to the summer program, CSEE has several education and outreach opportunities for Lab employees. Go here to see a complete list of activities.

Lawrence Road Closure
Scheduled for Weekend

The section of Lawrence Road near Building 54 will be closed on Saturday and Sunday for construction. Normal traffic in that area will resume on Monday. For more information, contact Kirk Haley at x4171.

New Postage Prices
Coming on May 12

On May 12, the U.S. Postal Service will adjust prices for First-Class Mail, Standard Mail, periodicals, package delivery, and special services. A First-Class stamp will rise to 42 cents. Customers can continue to use the Forever Stamps purchased prior to May 12 at 41 cents, even after the price change. Go here for more details.

DOE UPDATE


$33 Million Funding
For Renewable Fuels

The Department of Energy recently announced the investment of up to $33.8 million for four projects that will focus on developing improved enzyme systems to convert cellulosic material into sugars suitable for production of biofuels. Funding will support DSM Innovation Center in New Jersey, and three California companies: Genencor in Palo Alto, Novozymes in Davis, and Verenium in San Diego. Other major DOE-led biofuels R&D projects include up to $405 million in funding for three Bioenergy Centers, one of which, the Joint Bioenergy Institute, is centered at Berkeley Lab. Full story.
