SPECIAL EVENT

Workshop for Science
Education Volunteers

The Lab’s Center for Science and Engineering Education is hosting workshops on teaching science concepts to schoolchildren. The classes include hands-on activities used in outreach, insights on how children learn, strategies for effective science teaching, and resources and opportunities for teaching children from pre-kindergarten through high school. The workshop is open to all Lab staff interested in education outreach. A workshop will be held today from noon to 1:30 p.m. in Building 7-211. Another class will take place on Monday, Dec. 3, same time and location. Contact Rollie Otto (x2648) to sign up.

Lab Computer in Top
10 of ‘Fastest’ List
By Antone Gonslaves

NERSC's Franklin supercomputer
The BlueGene/L System, jointly developed by IBM and the U.S. Department of Energy, remains at the top of the list of the world’s fastest 500 supercomputers, which was announced at this week’s SC07 conference. BlueGene processes at a speed of 478.2 teraflops. “Franklin,” the Cray XT4 system installed at Berkeley Lab’s National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center (NERSC), came in at No. 9 with a performance of 85.4 teraflops. Full story.

Looking for the Higgs
At Fermilab

CDF Tevatron
Berkeley Lab physicist Weiming Yao was a co-author of a new report from the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF) collaboration, which details the search for the Higgs boson at the Tevatron. The report, highlighted on Nov. 8 in Fermilab Today, shows the steps taken by one CDF team towards closing in on the elusive particle, even though the search results are still about a factor of ten away from actually finding it. The Higgs boson is the one piece of the Standard Model of particle physics that has yet to be discovered. For more, go here.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Outside Print, Copy Jobs
Require GPO Approval

Because Berkeley Lab is a federal institution, no appropriated funds can be used to pay outside vendors for printing or photocopying. Employees must contact the Creative Services Office to process these requests via the Government Print Office (GPO). CSO also provides a quick, onsite photocopying service that does not require GPO approval. Go here for more information.

Update on Acquiring Mac
OS Leopard Licenses

The IT Help Desk has been sending Leopard Media to staff who have requested licenses and media through the Lab’s software website. Those who have not yet received their copy should contact the Help Desk (x4357). Employees who’ve acquired Leopard Media through other outside sources should make sure a valid license is provided for each computer on which it may be installed.
