ANNOUNCEMENTS

SHARES Campaign
Enters Final Week

There’s still time to donate to Berkeley Lab’s SHARES charitable giving campaign, which ends this Friday. The campaign, now in its fourth week, is a convenient way to assist non-profit health and service agencies while supporting the Lab's commitment to the community. As of last Friday, 68 Lab employees have donated almost $35,000. Employees can donate online or by filling out their donation forms. Go here to learn more, or e-mail shares@lbl.gov with any questions.

EH&S Division Offers
Online Safety Survey

Staff are encouraged to complete an online survey on the Lab’s safety culture and the services provided through the Lab’s Environment, Health and Safety Division. The 30-question survey should take about 10 minutes to complete. All input is anonymous. The survey — which includes new questions on ergonomics — will help identify which EH&S systems are working well and which need more attention. The survey ends Wednesday, Nov. 21. Go here to take the survey.

WORLD OF SCIENCE

Large Hadron Collider
Completes its Circle

LHC'S ATLAS Detector
At a brief ceremony deep in the French countryside last week, the last interconnect in the world’s largest cryogenic system, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), was sealed. This is the latest milestone in commissioning the LHC, the world’s most powerful particle accelerator. The LHC’s cryogenic system has the task of cooling some 36,800 tons of material to a temperature of just 1.9 degrees above absolute zero. To do this, over 10,000 tons of liquid nitrogen and 130 tons of liquid helium will be deployed through a cryogenic system including over 40,000 leak-tight welds. Last week’s ceremony marks the end of a two-year effort to connect all the main dipole and quadrupole magnets in the LHC. Full story.

‘Petascale’ Book in Series
Edited by Lab’s Simon

The College of Computing at Georgia Tech and Chapman & Hall/CRC Press announced the launch of “Petascale Computing: Algorithms and Applications,” the first published collection on petascale techniques for computational science and engineering, at the SC07 conference. “In the same way as petascale computing will open up new and unprecedented opportunities for research in computational science, I expect this current book to lead to a deeper understanding and appreciation of research in computational science and engineering,” said Horst Simon, Berkeley Lab’s associate director for computing sciences and editor of Chapman & Hall/CRC Press’ new Computational Science book series. HUMAN RESOURCES UPDATES

New Employee Orientation
Moves to Online Program

The Berkeley Lab Institute (BLI) has launched a New Employee Briefing (NEB), a 20-minute online program to introduce new employees to Berkeley Lab, with details on how the institution is organized, where things are, and links to information needed to work here. Current employees are invited to view the NEB and provide ideas about what other information could be included to make working at the Lab easier.  To view the NEB and provide feedback, click here.

Workshop on Lab’s
Tuition Reimbursement

The Berkeley Lab Institute (BLI) will offer a workshop on the Lab's Tuition Reimbursement Program on Wednesday, Dec. 12, in Building 2-100B from 10:30 a.m. to noon. Participants will learn about the program’s policy and guidelines, the types of services offered, how to access the necessary forms, and getting reimbursed. This workshop is free. Go here for more information and to register, or call Karen Paris (x5122).
