Chu Sets ‘Town Halls’
On S&E Job Changes

Berkeley Lab Director Steve Chu is inviting scientists and engineers to attend one of two Town Hall meetings to discuss recommended changes to hiring and promotion policies that would bring Lab procedures more in line with academic models. Next Wednesday (March 7, 3 p.m.) and March 22 (2 p.m.) in the Building 50 Auditorium, Deputy Director Graham Fleming and Senior Physicist Natalie Roe, Chair of the Scientific Advancement Committee (SAC), will host discussions about these recommendations. The meetings will be simulcast in the Building 66 Auditorium. Go here to read the Director’s invitation, which includes the SAC membership list.

POLICY UPDATE

Proposed Policy Regarding
S&E Job Classifications

Berkeley Lab is proposing a change to its current RPM §2.07 (Professional Research Staff) policy (see Director’s letter here). This also requires a revision to RPM §2.01 K, 4 (Term Appointments) and to RPM §2.21 D (Release of Term Appointments). If you wish to make comments on the proposed policy changes, read the revised text for §2.07, for §2.01 K, 4, and for §2.21 D. Any comments during this 30-day review period can be sent to the Human Resources Policy Analyst at hrpolicy@lbl.gov or at MS: 90R2121 by April 1.

Smoot, Rosenfeld
Among ‘Brilliant’ 25

Cal mag

The editors of UCLA Magazine and California, the university and alumni magazines of UCLA and UC Berkeley, collaborated to produce a special issue celebrating 25 brilliant California ideas that were either created or took off in the past 25 years. Faculties were polled to select ideas that were transformative in five broad but far-reaching categories: media and technology, culture and society, business, science and engineering, and the environment. The final selection, made jointly by the editors in consultation with faculty leaders, included two from Berkeley Lab – energy efficiency expert Art Rosenfeld, and Nobel Prize winner George Smoot. Read about Rosenfeld in “The Power of Less,” and Smoot in “Backing up the Big Bang.”

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Daylight Saving Patches
To Affect IT Services

The Information Technologies (IT) Division will be patching servers on Sunday from 7 a.m. to noon to upgrade systems for the upcoming Daylight Saving Time switch. Calendar, e-mail and e-mail lists will be down during that time. E-mail will be queued and delivered once service is restored. For questions, call the IT Help Desk (x4357).

Wake Up. It’s Sleep Awareness Week

The Health Care Facilitator reminds employees that March 5-9 is “National Sleep Awareness Week.” Sleep is a basic necessity of life, as important to our health and well-being as air, food and water. When we sleep well, we wake up feeling refreshed, alert and ready to face the day. When we don’t, every part of our lives can suffer. Our jobs, relationships, productivity, health and safety can be put at risk. Tips for good sleep include avoiding caffeine and alcohol close to bedtime, exercising regularly, establishing a regular bedtime and creating a sleep-conducive environment that is dark, quiet, cool and comfortable. Go here for more information.

UC Retirement Update
To Be Sent to Homes

University of California employees hired before Oct. 1, 2006 who are members of the UC Retirement Plan (UCRP) will receive a Personalized Retirement Update and Readiness Guide, mailed directly to their home addresses from FITSCo (Fidelity Tax Exempt Services Company). The Update will project estimated income and expenses in retirement, show all UC retirement and savings accounts in one place, demonstrate the effect of increasing contributions to the 403(b) and 457(b) Plans, and compare current investment mix to various samples. Read more about UC-FITSCo plans here.
