Helmets, Bike Permits
Ensure Safe Riding

All bicycle riders on Lab property must wear helmets that have been approved by the Consumer Product Safety Commission, Snell, or the American Society for Testing and Materials. In addition, bicyclists who wish to routinely ride on Lab property (more than once per month) are encouraged to obtain a Bicycle Permit from the Site Access office (Bldg. 65A). Once obtained, the Bicycle Permit must be visible at all times when operating a bicycle at the Lab. The permit is designed to make it easier for bicyclists to pass through the entry gates without stopping, and to confirm a basic understanding of safe bicycle operating measures and Berkeley Lab’s Bicycle Safety Policy.  More information about biking at the Lab is available from the Lab’s Bicycle Coalition website.

Students Receive Career Tips From CRD’s Meza

Meza
Juan Meza, head of the High Performance Computing Research Department in Berkeley Lab's Computational Research Division, shared his insights on getting a research position with 250 students at a recent talk presented by the Rice-Houston AGEP (Alliance for Graduate Education and the Professsoriate). The Rice-Houston AGEP unites many of the city’s universities and community colleges to increase the number of underrepresented minority students earning Ph.D. degrees and positioning them to become leaders in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Meza's presentation is posted here.

Is Tidal Energy
The Next Wave?
By Janis Mara

The tide is turning in the direction of alternative forms of energy — literally. Water flowing through the Golden Gate may provide a new source of zero-emission, renewable electric power for households and businesses in California thanks to a research agreement signed Tuesday between Pacific Gas & Electric, the City and County of San Francisco and Golden Gate Energy Co.  "Tidal power is an interesting form of renewable energy in that it is predictable. Other forms, like solar and wind energy, are less predictable," said Alex Farrell, a guest in Berkeley Lab's Earth Sciences Division. Full story.
