New Report: Fuel Economy
And Safety Are Compatible

image spacer image
Wenzel
Tom Wenzel, of the Environmental Energy Technologies Division, is appearing at a news conference in Washington D.C. today to discuss new research results indicating that it is possible to redesign cars to simultaneously improve safety and increase fuel economy. Wenzel and Marc Ross, University of Michigan, are co-authors of a paper titled "Increasing the Fuel Economy and Safety of New Light-Duty Vehicles." The issue of passenger vehicle safety will be at the heart of debate in the coming weeks as Congress considers an increase in the Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards. The Policy Briefing is sponsored by the Hewlett Foundation and the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT). Full story.

California Leads States
In Energy Efficiency

By Ian Hoffman

In the past 30 years, while Americans on average have nearly doubled their per capita consumption of electricity, Californians have kept their consumption about the same. This week, The American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy ranked California at the top of a state-by-state report card on energy efficiency. The question now, as California shoots for the broadest and steepest cuts in greenhouse gas emissions of any state, is whether the job will get much harder. "Physically it's harder to extract more and more savings from a diminishing pie," said Rich Brown, an energy scientist at Berkeley Lab. Full story.
