Borexino Experiment Spots
Low-Energy Neutrinos

Freedman
Low-energy neutrinos from the sun have been spotted by researchers for the first time. Detecting these solar particles confirms theories about how nuclear fusion occurs within the sun, and how neutrinos oscillate between different types. "This is a nice demonstration and I also expect more precise measurements," says Stuart Freedman, Berkeley Lab nuclear scientist and a leader of the collaboration that built and operates the KamLAND facility in Kamioka, Japan, which also aims to analyze low-energy solar neutrinos. Lab Physicist Has Higher
‘H’ Index Than Hawking

Cohen

Berkeley Lab physicist Marvin Cohen ranks higher than world-famous scientist Stephen Hawking, when measured using the h-index, a tool designed to impartially rate researchers by the quality of their work. An article in the August issue of Nature (UK) describes how the index — which looks at the number of papers a researcher gets published as well as how frequently they get cited — is a more fair and objective way to determine quality and predict future success. In the physicist category, Cohen’s h-index is 94, second only to Ed Witten (110) with Princeton. Stephen Hawking’s rating is 62. The index was developed by Jorge Hirsch at UC San Diego. Full story.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Take Extra Caution
To Prevent Laptop Theft

One of the objects of choice for thieves and burglars is the laptop computer, and Lab employees are reminded that extra precautions should be taken to protect business laptops from being stolen. This is one of the most common forms of personal identity theft. Like a wallet or purse, the laptop should be a part of everyone’s daily behavior — keep it in sight at all times, lock it up when not in use, and keep it out of sight in a car or office when not in use. Go here for more tips from the Security and Emergency Operations office.

Clarification of Helios
Construction Bid Process

An article in Monday’s edition of Today at Berkeley Lab on the construction of the Helios building stated that sealed bids were due on Sept. 11. To clarify, the Helios Project will be accepting proposals for Construction Management Services during the construction, with an option to manage the construction at some future date. For more information, contact Joe Harkins (x7486).

Flea Market Ads
Available Online

Lab employees are reminded that the classified ad service that used to appear in The View newspaper is now online. Access the Flea Market via the A-Z index, the link in the Today at Berkeley Lab info box (below), or bookmark the page.
