RESEARCH NEWS

MRI Breaks Ground
In Molecular Imaging

Diagram of HYPER-CEST process
Researchers at Berkeley Lab and UC Berkeley have developed a new technique for Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) that allows detection of signals from molecules present at 10,000 times lower concentrations than conventional MRI techniques. Called HYPER-CEST, for hyperpolarized xenon chemical exchange saturation transfer, this new technique holds great promise for molecular imaging, in which the spatial distribution of specific molecules is detected within an organism. Full story. Read a Contra Costa Times story on the research here.

EETD Now Testing
Clean Room Fans

Xu
Berkeley Lab is finalizing its Phase 2 Research and Demonstration on characterizing 2-by-4-foot fan filter units (FFUs) widely used for clean rooms, using a testing standard developed here. These breakthrough methods, developed by Tengfang Xu, with the Lab's Environmental Energy Technologies Division, are used to quantify efficiency and power demand across a range of operable conditions. Berkeley Lab has tested 17 different FFUs from manufacturers in Asia, Europe, and North America. Go here to read an article by Xu that appeared in CleanRooms Magazine's website.

Blackberry Gate Opens
With Ribbon Cutting

Yesterday at noon, the new, improved Blackberry Gate officially opened with a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by those who played a role in the project. The gate, completed on time and under budget, boasts safety and traffic improvements such as separate guest and employee entrances, better signage, and wider lanes. Security upgrades include designated lanes to process guests and modernized guard kiosks. A third kiosk will be constructed to help process guests, and gate arms will be installed at guest and employee entrances.

Office of Science's Orbach Speaks in S.F. Monday

Orbach
Department of Energy Under Secretary and Office of Science Director Ray Orbach will speak in San Francisco Monday on "Transformational Science for Energy and the Environment." It takes place at 11 a.m. at the San Francisco Public Library, 100 Larkin St., sponsored by the Library's Wallace Stegner Environmental Center and SF Environment. Orbach will discuss nature-based technology research at DOE labs to reduce CO2 and the effects of global warming.
ANNOUNCEMENTS

Make a Difference:
Donate to SHARES

The SHARES campaign is one week old, but there's still plenty of time to make a donation. The campaign, which runs through Nov. 3, is a convenient way to assist non-profit health and service agencies while supporting the Laboratory's commitment to the community. Employees can donate online or by filling out a donation form, which can be obtained in the cafeteria lobby and in the lobbies of buildings 84, 90, and 937. Go here to learn more, or e-mail shares@lbl.gov.

Cafeteria Gift Shop
Is Having a Sale

Custodian Jose Mayorga
Employees can get a jump on their holiday shopping and save some money in the process by stopping by the cafeteria gift shop to pick up 75th anniversary mugs ($4.99) and t-shirts ($4.99). Both items are offered for $2 off the regular price. Those who purchase a mug will get a free eight-ounce coffee. The sale runs from today through next Friday.

'View to the Future' Report Now Available

A bound, full-color report, in which Director Chu outlines his scientific vision for the Lab in the coming years, is now available to all employees. The document covers initiatives in energy technologies, living systems, nanoscience, matter and energy in the universe, ultrafast science, advanced computing, and operational support. Copies are available in the cafeteria lobby. Due to limited supply, staff are asked to take only one report.

Supervisor Training
Classes Available

The Berkeley Lab Institute still has space open for the final two supervisor training courses in 2006. "The Art of Resolving Conflicts in the Workplace" (BLI0012) will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 14, and "Moving into Management" (BLI0013) on Tuesday, Dec. 12. Click here for more information and to enroll.

Green Tech Academy
Offered at UC Davis

The Center for Entrepreneurship at UC Davis is hosting a first-ever Green Technology Academy next March 26-30. The Academy is open to doctoral students, post-docs and researchers. Students will learn to "recognize, develop, and bring to market green business built on their research. Go here for more information.
