Environmental Review
Open for User Building

Berkeley Lab issued an Initial Study and Proposed Mitigated Negative Declaration yesterday for the demolition of Building 10 and the construction and operation of a User Support Building. The facility would be three stories and 30,000 square feet of assembly space, support laboratories, and offices adjacent to the Advanced Light Source. The environmental document is available on the Lab's web site here.  Review and comment is being invited until Friday, Dec. 8.  Comments may be sent to Jeff Philliber, the Lab’s environmental planning coordinator, by e-mail or written to Bldg. 90J-120.

World Listens to Physics Prof's Online Lectures

Muller
UC Berkeley professor and Berkeley Lab physicist Richard Muller finds himself suddenly popular in some surprising corners of the world. It turns out self-starting students in 35 states and 43 countries have been watching the 90-minute "Physics for Future Presidents" talks he gives every Tuesday and Thursday morning to a packed lecture hall of 300 undergrads on campus. And the list is growing. Under UC Berkeley's recent deal with Google Video to distribute university-produced course and event video and audio files, Muller's talks are available free and unedited, and come with his textbook and other course documents online. Full story.
PEOPLE

International Fulbright
Scholars Visiting Lab

Two foreign professional scientists are in residence at Berkeley Lab this year as part of the 2006-07 class of Fulbright Visiting Scholars. They include Kristin Andersen, a postdoctoral researcher from the Norwegian Radium Hospital in Oslo who is researching the S100A4 protein influence on the tumor stroma microenvironment in breast cancer for the Life Sciences Division. The Materials Sciences Division is hosting Secundino Manuel Valvidares Suarez, from the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility in Grenoble, France. He is researching synchrotron soft x-ray based techniques for the study of nanostructures. To find out more about the Fulbright Program, America's flagship international educational exchange activity, go here.
ANNOUNCEMENTS

SHARES Campaign
Extended One Week

The deadline for the 2006 Berkeley Lab SHARES charitable giving campaign has been extended one week. The last day to make donations is now Friday, Nov. 10. The campaign supports the Lab's commitment to reach out to surrounding communities and help organizations that depend largely on donations. Employees can donate online or fill out a donation form, available in the lobbies of the cafeteria and Buildings 84, 90, and 937. Go here to learn more, or e-mail shares@lbl.gov.

Conference Guidelines
Have Been Revised

Office of Science Director Raymond Orbach has issued a revised "SC Conference Management Guidance," dated Sept. 12.  The guidance reduces the number of days necessary for review of conference approval requests from a 90-day review period, to no fewer than 45 days for SC-1 approval of SC-funded conferences, and travel to conferences.  However, Berkeley Lab is requiring all requests to be submitted to Conference Services no later than 60 days prior to the date of the conference to allow sufficient time to obtain other required Lab and Berkeley Site Office approvals. Office of Science continues to review the Conference Management guidance and could make further changes in the near future.
