75th ANNIVERSARY

Founders Day Features
Quirky Nanoscience Film

Schuller
Schuller
What could a stadium-sized bowl of peanuts, a magic tennis ball, shrinking elephants, and a crazed hockey player teach us about nanoscience? To find out, come to the building 50 auditorium at 1:30 p.m. on Founders Day to hear noted nanoscientist Ivan Schuller introduce his new movie “When Things Get Small.” His talk, and the short film that follows, will take the audience on a comically corny romp into the real-life quest to create the smallest magnet ever known. Schuller is a UC San Diego physics professor and co-producer of the film. Learn more about Schuller and his film here. View the entire building 50 cinema playlist, and the Founders Day program, here.

Last Call: Time Capsule
Predictions for 2031

Berkeley Lab employees have just two more days to submit their forecasts for what life will be like 25 years from now, to be included in the Founders Day time capsule on Saturday. The predictions can be about science, the Lab community, or the state of the State, Nation or World. Visionaries should send their thoughts in an e-mail here, to arrive no later than 5 p.m. tomorrow. Director Steve Chu, who will seal the capsule, was among the first to submit his views, which can be read here.

Dell Battery Recall
Safety Protocol

Dell notebook
Dell has begun shipping the first of over 4 million new batteries to replace batteries subject to fire hazards in laptops sold between April 2004 and July 2006. To find out if a battery is defective, go here or call the IT Help Desk (x4357). If a battery is recalled, users may continue to use their Dell notebook safely by turning the system off, ejecting the battery, and using the AC adapter and power cord until the replacement battery arrives. For details, go here.

City Landmarks Bevatron
Site, Not Building
By Richard Brenneman

The battle over landmarking the Bevatron building ended Aug. 3 when a Berkeley city panel voted to bestow the honorific not on the structure itself but on the ground beneath. The 5-4 decision by the Landmarks Preservation Commission ended an agonizing process that had lasted through months and a long series of deadlocked votes. In adopting the motion by Burton Edwards, the commission called out the details of the revolutionary discoveries made within the massive circular building, as well as the discoverers—while leaving out all mention of the structure and its unique architecture. Read a Berkeley Daily Planet article on the landmarking process here.

Scientists Cheer
Signs of Dark Matter

By Betsy Mason

If you listen carefully, you might hear a collective "I told you so" echoing through the universe as physicists celebrate confirmation that dark matter exists. A team including scientists at Stanford Linear Accelerator Center has found evidence of the mysterious stuff that makes up about 90 percent of the mass of the universe. They did it by watching galaxies collide 3 billion light-years away. “It's like somebody hanging a little sign out there that says, 'Come find me,' " said Berkeley Lab physicist Michael Levi, who was not involved in the study. "We may know by the end of the decade what dark matter is." Full story.
