IN THE NEWS

Lab Website Included
In Energy-Saving Story

O.K., so you've been putting off weatherizing your home or replacing that aging dishwasher with an energy- efficient model. With the impact of Hurricane Katrina promising higher energy costs this winter, is it finally time to get started on all those energy-saving projects? The best way to get an idea where you can save money is to do an energy audit. At energystar.gov, use the Home Energy Analysis link to get recommendations based on a simple questionnaire. For a more detailed audit, go to Berkeley Lab's Home Energy Saver website. Full story.

PEOPLE

Electrochemist Cairns
Joins Honorary Society

Cairns
Elton Cairns, with the Lab's Environmental Energy Technologies Division, has been inducted as an honorary member to the International Society of Electrochemistry. Cairns and his research group study the "fundamental properties and behavior of electrodes employed in high-performance rechargeable batteries and fuel cells." He is the former director of what was then called the Environment and Energy Division. Go here to read a story on the history of electrochemical research at the Lab and Cairns' role in its formation.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Safety Survey Deadline
Extended to Tomorrow

A questionnaire on Berkeley Lab's safety culture will be available for completion through close of business tomorrow. Lab employees are encouraged to comment on the services provided by Environment, Health and Safety in this 10-minute, 30-question survey. Results will contribute to making the Lab a safer place to work. All input is anonymous. Go here to take the survey.
