PEOPLE

Chemla Receives DOE 'Distinguished' Award

Chemla

Daniel Chemla, director of Berkeley Lab's Advanced Light Source, recently received a Department of Energy Distinguished Associate Award. The honor recognizes his "many accomplishments, contributions, and leadership in both science and science management," according to the citation signed by DOE Secretary Samuel Bodman. It went on to say: "You have brought the Advanced Light Source to a prominent role as a national and international scientific user facility. Your pioneering research in nanoscience and dedication to the establishment of the Department of Energy Nanoscience Research Centers has made it a reality."

SPECIAL EVENT

Perlmutter to Speak
At 'Friends' Lecture

Perlmutter

Berkeley Lab physicist Saul Perlmutter is the featured speaker at the next "Friends of Science" lecture on Monday, Nov. 14, at 5 p.m. in the Berkeley Repertory Theatre (2025 Addison St.). He will discuss how the seemingly philosophical question of whether the universe will last forever or come to an end someday can be answered empirically, using measurements from exploding stars. The event, organized by the Lab's Community Relations Office, is presented in association with the Chabot Space and Science Center and the World Year of Physics.

FACES AT THE LAB

Gauny
Life Scientist Honored
For Her Volunteer
Efforts

Meet Stacey Gauny, a principal research associate in the Life Sciences Division for almost 14 years. She works on DNA damage and repair following ionizing radiation. In addition to her scientific expertise, Gauny is a very giving person — a quality she is being honored for by the Albany YMCA. Three times a week for the last 13 years, she has provided karate instruction for children in its youth program. To recognize her efforts, the YMCA named her "Volunteer of the Year." "Karate is not just about self-defense, it also teaches self-awareness and discipline," she said. "What a great opportunity it is to see my students use these concepts to help shape themselves as they grow up."

UCOP UPDATE

Consolidation of Oakland
Offices to Take Place

As part of its ongoing systemwide efficiency efforts, the University of California's Office of the President has announced the selection of 1100 Broadway in downtown Oakland as the new site for its office consolidation initiative. In addition to its offices at 1111 Franklin St., the President's Office has five satellite offices in and around Oakland, housing various university operations including systemwide human resources and benefits, the UC treasurer's office, the California Digital Library, and several special research and academic preparation programs. The consolidation of office leases allows the university to bring these functions under one roof in a cost-effective manner. Full story.
