SHARES 2005

Berkeley Museum Helps
Kids Learn to Live Well

The Hall of Health, sponsored by Children's Hospital & Research Center at Oakland, is a community health-education museum and science center dedicated to promoting wellness and individual responsibility for health. Each year, more than 12,000 children visit the Hall of Health to learn about the workings of the body, the value of sound diet and exercise, and the destructive effects of smoking and drug abuse. Berkeley Lab employees can donate to the center, and many more charities, through the SHARES campaign, now through Nov. 18. To learn more about SHARES, go here. To make online contributions, go here. Send any questions to the SHARES answer line here.

SPECIAL EVENT

NCEM, ALS Host
Imaging Workshop

The Lab's National Center for Electron Microscopy and Advanced Light Source are hosting a daylong workshop tomorrow on "Micromagnetic Imaging at Nanometer Resolution," in the Building 66 Auditorium. Speakers from across the United States as well as Europe will be on hand to discuss this topic. Go here for more information on the event. Questions can be forwarded to Andreas Schmid (x4564).

PEOPLE

Volunteers Make 'Edge'
Event a Big Success

Sixteen employees volunteered their time last Saturday to assist the Lab's Center for Science and Engineering Education in hosting 40 students who came onsite to learn more about science. The goal of the event, called the Berkeley Edge program, is to recruit, retain, and advance talented minority students in the field of science. The volunteers assisted with tours and conducted small-group discussions about their work. Go here to see a list of those who assisted with this event.

Alvarez's Scientific
Legacy Recounted

Alvarez
The sister of famed physicist Luis Alvarez was the secretry of E.O. Lawrence, and she introduced the two in 1936. Lawrence gave Alvarez a research assistant job at the Radiation Laboratory, which eventually became Berkeley Lab. A profile of this pioneering Nobel Prize winner is featured in ScienceMatters@Berkeley, a webzine produced by the campus's College of Letters and Science. Go here to read the full story.
