Global Warming Fix:
Bury Emissions Below

Benson

Berkeley Lab earth scientist Sally Benson was among the experts quoted in a recent Newhouse News Service story on carbon sequestration. The article describes how this process — which includes options such as burying millions of tons of carbon dioxide underground — could be an antidote to global warming. According to Benson, stashing CO2 seemed "pretty far out" just a few years ago. Now she contends it can be stored safely underground for thousands of years. Full story.

COMPUTER UPDATE

MacOSX Security Topic
Of Brown Bag Talk

Recent break-ins into MacOSX systems at the Lab show that Mac security is a real concern. What should Mac users do? Ian Kaufman, with the National Center for Electron Microscopy, will cover this topic at the Computer Protection Brown Bag Event at noon next Tuesday in Building 70A-3377. He'll discuss the recent break-ins and then cover HFS+ security, anti-virus software on Macs, disk/file encryption tools, and how to use MacOSX's built-in firewall. Bring your lunch and your questions.

SPECIAL EVENT

Nanoparticle Lecture
Series Launches Today

Maddalena
McKone
An interdisciplinary group of Lab researchers — recognizing the need for research on "Nanoparticle Impacts on Human Health and the Environment" — have launched a new lecture series on the topic. The series will cover such issues as nanoparticle detection, geochemical interactions and transport properties, and the use of molecular biology methods to assess the response of living organisms to nanoparticles. The first lecture takes place today at 1 p.m. in the Building 66 Auditorium. It features Lab scientists Randy Maddalena and Tom McKone, and UC Berkeley's Agnes Lobscheid, who will speak on "Prospective Evaluation of Environmental Hazards Related to Manufactured Nanomaterials Dispersed in the Environment."
