Cement Initiative Reports
On Sustainability Progress

One of the largest global sustainability programs ever undertaken by a single industry sector, the Cement Sustainability Initiative (CSI), released its first progress report this month. Representing more than half the world’s cement production outside China, the CSI report documents the delivery on pledges made in 2002, in particular in CO2 emissions, the use of fuels and raw materials and occupational health and safety. Probably the most significant is the production of a protocol for measuring and reporting CO2 emissions from cement manufacturing, the first time an industry has adopted a voluntary and independently audited emissions protocol. The report documents measurement of progress, and lists partners, including Berkeley Lab. Full story here.

POLICY UPDATE

Hiring Small Business
Is Good Lab Business

Fernandez

Berkeley Lab Chief Financial Officer Jeffrey Fernandez encourages Laboratory employees to subcontract with small businesses whenever possible, an effort consistent with Lab goals and policy. Besides bringing the advantages of lower cost, flexibility, and service orientation, contracting with small businesses is a priority of the Laboratory’s prime contract with the Department of Energy. For more information, contact Ron Ball (x4513) or Sheri Freeman (x6743) in the Small Business & Supply Management Office. For a full text of Fernandez’ call to the Lab community, go here. For more information on small business opportunities at the Lab, go here.
