Liphardt

Internet search engine Google is quickly taking the place of such things as trips to the library, a call home to mom, a recipe box, phone book, and neighborly advice. But it's not appropriate for every question, as physician Jennifer Lee found out. Her fiancé, Jan Liphardt, a guest in Berkeley Lab's Physical Biosciences Division, went to Google "engagement rituals," just after she accepted his proposal, but smartly returned to her side before touching his computer. EHS Director to Focus
On New Safety Initiative

Pei

Phyllis Pei, Division Director for Environment, Health and Safety, will change roles and support Chief Operations Officer David McGraw in a new safety initiative, it was announced Tuesday. Pei will work on benchmarking other Office of Science laboratories and industry safety cultures and will recommend best-in-class practices for Berkeley Lab. "Given the extreme importance of establishing a safe work environment at Berkeley Lab, as well as Phyllis' extensive experience in both the public and private sectors, I have asked her to devote full time to lead this effort," McGraw said. Howard Hatayama, ES&H Director for the Laboratory Management Office at the University of California's Office of the President, will serve as acting Division Director of EH&S, effective Jan. 2. ANNOUNCEMENTS

No E-Mail, Internet
6 to 7 a.m. Tomorrow

There will be an interruption to all IT Division services, including central e-mail, web, and calendar, starting at 6 a.m. tomorrow (Dec. 22). The service interruption is expected to last an hour. This outage will allow electrical power to be switched to an alternate source so the systems can remain online during the upcoming major power shutdown over the holiday break. There will also be a second, similar interruption after the holiday break, starting at 6 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 3 to reconnect to the original power source, which is also expected to last an hour. For more information, contact the Help Desk (x4357).

Tomorrow, the final day of shuttle service for this year, the last off-site shuttle bus will depart Building 65 at 6:10 p.m. The last on-site bus will leave the same destination at 5:50 p.m. The Rockridge bus will make its last run at 5:40 p.m. At 5:30 p.m., the last Bancroft bus will depart Buildings 62/66.
