Post Story On Bay's Toxic Goldmining Legacy

Research led by Berkeley Lab scientist Tom McKone (Environmental Energy Technologies Division) on how San Francisco Bay is still contaminated by mercury left by gold miners 150 years ago was featured in Sunday's edition of the Washington Post. While the Bay is getting cleaner, he said, it will take a long time to flush out all the mercury. Full story.

Perez-Mendez, Retired
Physicist, Passes Away

Perez-Mendez

Victor Perez- Mendez, a physicist who worked for the Lab from 1955 to 1995, passed away on Nov. 1 at age 82. He was a specialist in particle and nuclear physics, radiation detection, and medical physics. More information about Perez-Mendez's life and career is available here.

MacArthur 'Genius' Now
Among 'Sexiest' Men

Berkeley Lab earth scientist and newly appointed MacArthur fellow Michael Manga is among those featured in People Magazine's "Sexiest Man Alive" special feature. "I wanted to get information out to people who wouldn't normally hear or see anything about science," says the volcano specialist of his reluctant participation.
