PEOPLE

Chu Adds Ombudsman
Role to Reed's Portfolio

Reed

Long-time Berkeley Lab Head for the Office of Workforce Diversity, Harry Reed, has been given the additional responsibility of serving as Lab Ombudsman by Director Steve Chu. In that role, Reed will be available to staff to help resolve complaints, misunderstandings, or conflicts that arise from Lab policies, practices or relationships. He will conduct informal investigations, provide advice on available resources, and make referrals as appropriate. Go here for more information.

Heinemann to Chair
Catalysis Meeting

Heinemann

Heinz Heinemann -- a distinguished scientist at Berkeley Lab and organizer of science seminars at the Washington D.C. Projects Office -- will be the honorary chair of the 2005 Annual Meeting of the Catalysis Association of North America in May.  The meeting will focus on various original catalysis topics, such as chemical, petroleum, environmental, fuel cell, and polymerization. Heinemann boasts more than 50 years experience in fundamental and applied catalysis research. Go here for more information on the meeting.

COMPUTER UPDATE

Users Beware of Web
Postcard Messages

Computer users should be aware of the latest Internet security threat: e-mail messages that appear to be web postcards. These messages, which have subject lines such as "you have received a virtual postcard from a family member," direct users who receive them to a website which, if visited, installs a Trojan horse program designed to evade anti-virus software and personal firewalls. Again, always be wary of unexpected e-mail attachments.

IN THE NEWS

'Hot Quarks' Papers
Featured in Publication

Several Berkeley Lab researchers are featured in a special focus issue of the Institute of Physics Journal of Physics G: Nuclear and Particle Physics. This issue was devoted to accepted papers from invited guests at the Hot Quarks 2004 Workshop for Young Scientists on the Physics of Ultra-Relativistic Nucleus-Nucleus Collisions. Authoring or co-authoring papers from the Lab were Abhijit Majumder, Xin-Nian Wang, Markus Oldenburg and Kirill Filimonov, all with the Nuclear Sciences Division.

SAFETY NOTE

Watch Your Step When
Using Step Stools

This type of step stool is safer.

The improper use of step stools, or using the wrong kind of step stool, can cause serious injury requiring medical treatment. The folks at the Lab's Health Services department would like to remind employees to follow some basic rules to prevent these kinds of accidents. Go here to learn more about the safe use of step stools.
