Nobel-winning Chief
Makes a UC Homecoming

Chu

Steven Chu is the self-
described black sheep of his family. The fact that he has won a Nobel Prize in physics and just became director of Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory should tell you something about his family. "I'm the only one in the family with only one advanced degree," said Chu. Chu was raised to be a scholar from the start. He remembers being a second-grader and being told by his parents that he shouldn't get married until after he had earned his Ph.D. Though he didn't exactly follow that advice to the letter, Chu went on to become one of the brightest scientists of his generation. Full story.

Ingenious Spectroscopy
In Latest Science Beat

The latest edition of Berkeley Lab's online science magazine, Science Beat, is now available. Among the stories in this issue: an ingenious technique — soft x-ray standing-wave spectroscopy — is being used to study futuristic electronic devices; scientists at a rocket factory deep inside Russia have been inspired by DOE's Initiatives for Proliferation Prevention to build compact wind turbines that could bring electricity to farthest Mongolia; and a computer scientist puts the leading computer models to the test to determine how good climate predictions are. For these stories and more, go straight to the latest Science Beat.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Hot, Dry, Windy Conditions
Prompt Red Flag Warning
Today

A "Red Flag Warning" is in place today due to low humidity, high temperatures and winds from the East. Employees are reminded to: not smoke in areas near dry grass/vegetation, park vehicles only on paved or shielded surfaces, and obtain a "Hot Work" permit (x6015) prior to starting any work that can create flames, sparks, or heat, such as welding, torch cutting, and copper sweating. Anyone who smells smoke or sees flames should call x7911 (or 911 from a cell or off-site phone) as soon as possible.

Lab's Fall Flu Vaccine Clinics
Are Cancelled

Due to the shortage of flu vaccine this year and subsequent rationing, the Lab's flu vaccine program, normally sponsored by Health Services, will be cancelled. If you are a high-risk individual, call your healthcare provider, or contact local grocery or drug stores, regarding flu shot availability.
COMPUTER UPDATES

ESnet Boosts Bandwidth
In Upgrade for Research

As part of its long-term plan to increase both bandwidth and reliability, DOE's Office of Science Energy Sciences Network — better known as ESnet — has just completed increasing the bandwidth to a number of research sites. Links to Brookhaven and Oak Ridge national labs have been upgraded to 2.5 Gpbs, the link to CERN LHC data network to 10 Gbps, and at multiple locations to Abilene (Internet2's high-speed network) to 2.5 and 10 Gbps. ESnet is managed at Berkeley Lab for the DOE. Go here to read more.
