Lighting Control Wins 'Flex Your Power' Award

Rosenfeld
A lighting control innovation developed at Berkeley Lab was among 20 winners of 2003 Flex Your Power Energy Efficiency Awards. In partnership with Doubletree Hotels, the Sacramento Municipal Utility District, and Watt Stopper, the Lab was recognized for the research and testing of a motion-sensing wall switch in hotel bathrooms. Also honored by Flex Your Power was Art Rosenfeld, who in 1974 formed the Center for Building Science at Berkeley Lab and for 20 years developed a variety of innovative energy-efficient products and programs here. He received the Lifetime Achievement in Energy Efficiency Award. For a description of award winners, go here.

My Computer Can Beat
Up Your Computer

Simon

A spitting match is heating up over who's got the biggest supercomputer. For now, Japan's Earth Simulator is the world's fastest supercomputer. However, IBM has teamed up with the Lawrence Livermore Lab to build Blue Gene/L, which, they say, will exceed the combined computing power of the world's top 500 existing machines. Blue Gene will give scientists a tremendous competitive advantage over other researchers. It's like "having an electron microscope when everyone else has an optical microscope," says Horst Simon, associate laboratory director for Computing Sciences at Berkeley Lab. POLICY UPDATE

Substance Abuse
In the Workplace

The Laboratory recognizes dependency on alcohol and other drugs as a treatable condition and offers programs and services for employees and students with substance dependency problems. Employees are encouraged to seek assistance, as appropriate, from employee support programs, health centers, and counseling or psychological services available through the Laboratory's Employee Assistance Program. The Laboratory strives to maintain a work site free from the illegal use, possession, or distribution of alcohol or controlled substances, and has legal consequences for those who violate the policy, which can be found here.
