IN THE NEWS

Nanotechnology Can Have Big Future in Bay Area

The Bay Area is an internationally recognized hotbed of nanotechnology, but it must not rest on its laurels if this science of the ultra-small is to provide big future economic benefits to the region. This is the main message of a 36-page report on nanotechnology in the Bay Area released by the Bay Area Science and Innovation Consortium (BASIC). "For many decades, the fertile confluence of inventors, scientists and entrepreneurs — like that which will occur at the Molecular Foundry — has helped make the Bay Area one of the world's most vibrant and successful regions," said Robert J.T. Morris, director of IBM's Almaden Research Center in San Jose, and Chairman of BASIC. Full story.

Technology Glitch
Delays View to Monday

Today' scheduled publication of Berkeley Lab's biweekly, The View,
will be delayed until Monday due to an unexpected technical problem with
the software design program. The Communications Department regrets any inconvenience this may cause.

SAFETY NOTES

Watch Your Step
When Using Stool

As part of the Lab's ongoing effort to improve safety and prevent injuries among employees, "Today at Berkeley Lab" will periodically run photos of unsafe conditions and offer suggestions on how to avoid injury. For example, in this photo, an employee missed the bottom step (green arrow), which had a rounded arch to it, and then landed abruptly on the floor, injuring her right knee. Horizontal steps without the arch would have decreased the risk of missing the bottom step.
