Office of Science Budget
Increase is Uncertain

Despite all the attention given to the relatively flat funding profile for the Department of Energy's Office of Science, and physical sciences in general, the outlook on a legislative initiative to increase the Office of Science budget is clouded. Siren Survey To Test
New Warning System

Beginning tomorrow and continuing through the week, the Lab's Facilities Department will be field testing an outdoor warning system that could be used to enhance emergency preparedness for employees and visitors. Between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. each day, a series of short-term test sirens will be heard at various locations around the lab. Public address announcements will accompany each test. The warning system will be coordinated with UC Berkeley, Berkeley and Oakland. For information, call Glen Skipper at x6125.

While some say the Bay Area needs to get organized or risk losing out on these government grants, others say the area still attracts plenty of money, evidenced in part by the development of the Molecular Foundry at Berkeley Lab.
