Livermore Name Change
Would Honor Teller
by Andrea Widener

Teller

If Rep. Duncan Hunter has his way, Edward Teller's name may live on in more than just history books. The powerful San Diego-area Republican wants to rename Lawrence Livermore Laboratory after the physicist and lab co-founder, who died last month at age 95. The proposal is bound to be controversial because of Teller's history as an inventor of the hydrogen bomb, a constant nuclear advocate and a proponent of the Reagan-era missile defense system. Full story.

Lab Partners in Carbon
Sequestration Oil Project

The Department of Energy has announced that its "Teapot Dome" oil field in Wyoming will anchor a pioneering scientific venture that ultimately could prove to be one option of large-scale, region-wide carbon sequestration — a critical step in support of emissions-free energy and the goals of President Bush's Climate Initiative. Berkeley Lab is among the partners in the effort. Full story.

AWARDS

Drivers Lauded
For Safe Driving

At a special ceremony held yesterday in Perseverance Hall, four bus drivers and one truck driver received Spot awards for driving safely. They were honored for reaching five-year milestones without a preventable accident. This year’s honorees included Gwen Holland (5 years) and (pictured left to right) Ralph Sallee (5 years), Penny Casteel (5 years), Frank Wright (10 years), and Scott Holbein (5 years). The five received a certificate and small cash gift. The award was established to “recognize and promote safe vehicle operation for the drivers who spend their days providing a valuable service to the Lab community.”

PEOPLE

Goblins, Ghouls and
Ghosts Invade the Lab

Today is Halloween, and Lab employees have embraced this holiday with unbridled enthusiasm, decorating their offices, handing out candy, dressing up, and — most importantly — having fun. Go here to see a photo album featuring various festivities around the Lab.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

SHARES Giving Campaign Will Now Be Electronic

Berkeley Lab SHARES, the annual charitable giving campaign, will begin on Monday with a new, simpler method of making donations. Replacing the paper packets of previous years, the program will now be web-based, and participating employees will visit a secure website to make their donations. Detailed instructions will appear in Monday’s issue of “Today at Berkeley Lab.” Read Lab Director Charles Shank’s letter announcing the 2003 campaign here.

Don’t Forget, Benefits
Vendor Fair is Today

The annual Vendor Fair will be held in Perseverance Hall today, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Representatives from UC’s various health, welfare, and legal plans, as well as staff from the Lab’s Benefits Department, will be on hand to discuss concerns and answer questions.
