Gale
Berkeley Women
Mobilized Early On

By Angela Hill

They probably wouldn't have called it girl power back then. Perhaps something more decorous such as ladies of fortitude or gentlewomen's adroitness. Maybe even matronly might. Regardless, women in Berkeley got things done around and about the turn of the last century. Details of all this rich her-story can be found in a new exhibit at the Berkeley History Center titled appropriately, "Early Berkeley Women: 1878-1953," which runs through March and was curated by Berkeley Lab’s Phyllis Gale, who works in financial services. Full story.

Dynes Comments, Lab
Highlights in 'Update'

Comments from new University of California President Robert Dynes on management of the UC labs, among other issues, and three research highlights from Berkeley Lab are among the features in this month's issue of LabUPDATE, a President's Office newsletter. Dynes pledges to "do all I can to continue a relationship that has been extraordinarily fruitful for the nation, the University, and the staffs at the laboratories," and he introduces new Vice President for Laboratory Management Robert Foley. AWARDS

Iain Walker Receives
Alumni Horizon Award

Walker

Last week, Iain Walker, with the Lab’s Indoor Environment Department (Environmental Energy Technologies Division), received an Alumni Horizon Award from his alma mater, the University of Alberta. This award recognizes the outstanding achievements of alumni early in their careers. Go here for more information about the award.

Shendell

Shendell Selected for
Exclusive Conference

The National Center for Environmental Health, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention/Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry has chosen the Lab’s Derek Shendell, with Environmental Energy Technologies Division, as one of about 70 emerging leaders from across the country to attend the National Environmental Public Health conference in December. According to the selection committee, there was significant competition for this honor, and Shendell’s selection is a testament to the “qualities and accomplishments” he has already exhibited in his career.

COMPUTER UPDATE

Windows Vulnerabilities
Should Be Patched

Microsoft has recently announced five new vulnerabilities in Windows Operating systems. These could enable unauthorized persons to completely take over your system. The best course of action is to go here and download the appropriate cumulative patch ("megapatch") from the Lab's download site. Go here for more information about these vulnerabilities. For assistance with downloading these patches, contact the Help Desk at 486-4357 or help@lbl.gov.
