Employees Invited To ‘Neighbors’ Event

Berkeley Lab employees, especially those who live in neighborhoods surrounding the lab, are invited to attend Thursday’s community conversation about laboratory programs at the Strawberry Canyon Recreation Area’s Haas Clubhouse. After initial comments by Lab Director Charles Shank and Berkeley Mayor Tom Bates, Lab staff will host information tables describing scientific initiatives, land management programs, and science education activities. The 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. event will also feature light refreshments. Wheelchair-accessible buses will run shuttle service from 7:15 to 9:30 between the Berkeley BART station and the Clubhouse.

Lanzara

Allessandra Lanzara, an investigator in Berkeley Lab’s Materials Sciences
Division, has been selected to receive the 2003 William L. McMillan Award for "outstanding contributions in condensed matter physics." The award honors the memory of a noted physicist at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where the $1,000 prize is given. The McMillan award is presented annually to a condensed matter physicist for distinguished research performed within five years of receiving the Ph.D. degree.

New PNNL Director
Looks for Berkeley Ties

The new Director of Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, Len Peters, spent Monday meeting with Berkeley Lab officials and observing programs here and at the Joint Genome Institute. His first visit to the Lab highlighted current and potential partnerships between the two institutions. Peters, former research vice provost at Virginia Tech, toured the Advanced Light Source and the JGI and met with leaders of computing sciences and energy efficiency programs.

New Grant Proposal
System Launches Today

The Sponsored Projects Office (SPO) launches the Research Administration Proposal Information Database (RAPID) today. RAPID replaces a 15-year-old system and is the Laboratory’s implementation of PeopleSoft’s Grants Management. It covers the administrative aspects of creating and managing non-DOE research proposals along with award authorization, project creation, and post-award administrative management. Full story.
