Icebound Telescope
Probes the Universe
By David Whitehouse

Amanda-2

The first ever map of the neutrino sky has been produced by a novel telescope encased in ice at the South Pole. Astronomers have been able to detect neutrinos - particles that trace the most violent events in the cosmos, many of them yet to be explained. The detector, Amanda 2 (Antarctic Muon and Neutrino Detector Array - 2), is designed to look not up, but down, through the Earth to the sky of the Northern Hemisphere. Berkeley Lab researchers developed the second generation Digital Optical Module electronics used on Amanda. Full story.

Safety Notes

Warm Summer Days

Indoor and outdoor temperatures at the Lab can become very warm during certain periods throughout the summer and early fall months. To help stay cool during this time of year, there are several steps employees can take, such as wearing lightweight, light-colored, loose clothing that allows free movement of air over the skin's surface, drinking plenty of water, and eating a light lunch. If an employee feels the onset of a heat related condition, they should contact Health Services at 6266. In emergency situations, the Fire Department should be contacted by calling 7911. For more information on Heat Stress, visit PUB 3000, OSHA's fact sheet on working outdoors or contact Rob Connelly in the EH&S Division at 4028, rjconnelly@lbl.gov.

…Vote to Prohibit
Faculty-Student Romance

The University of California Board of Regents yesterday approved an amendment to the Faculty Code of Conduct that will effectively prohibit faculty from entering into consensual romantic or sexual relationships with any student for whom the faculty member has, or is likely to have, academic responsibility. A faculty member found in violation of the new policy may face any of six different disciplinary sanctions, ranging from a letter of censure to dismissal from the university. Full story.

…Adopt Green Building,
Clean Energy Policies

Establishing one of the first policies of its kind in the nation, the University of California Board of Regents approved a universitywide policy for the design of "green" buildings and a standard for the use of "clean" energy yesterday. The policy calls for UC to adopt principles of energy efficiency and sustainability in its capital projects to the fullest extent possible, taking into account budgetary constraints and regulatory and programmatic requirements. It also calls for the university to minimize its impact on the environment and reduce non-renewable energy use by purchasing green power from the electrical grid, promoting energy efficiency, and creating local renewable power sources. …Make Director Nanos
Permanent at Los Alamos

Nanos

The University of California Board of Regents yesterday named retired Vice Admiral George P. "Pete" Nanos, currently interim director, as permanent director of the UC-managed Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico. Nanos has served as the laboratory's interim director since Jan. 6, 2003. Acting on the recommendation of UC President Richard C. Atkinson, the regents appointed Nanos the seventh director of the Los Alamos laboratory. Full story.
