Two Berkeley Lab Projects
Win R&D 100 Awards

Two projects involving Berkeley Lab scientists have won prestigious R&D 100 awards for technological innovation. The 2003 awards, announced yesterday by the sponsoring R&D Magazine, went to EnergyPlus Software for Designing Energy Efficient Buildings, developed by the Environmental Energy Technologies Division; and EUV Lithography, a joint program submitted by Berkeley and Sandia National Laboratories for a process that will likely produce the next generation of computer chips. EnergyPlus is a new-generation computer program that models the expected energy use of commercial and residential buildings. The Extreme Ultraviolet Lithography project, involving over 100 researchers, is developing technology to produce microprocessors and memory chips that are tens of times faster than today's most powerful chips. Details on both will be included in the July 11 issue of Currents.

Walk for Breast Cancer

Michelle Flynn, team leader for budget and planning in waste management at the Lab, has two things to show for her 40-mile walk last weekend – sore feet, and more than $2,500 in pledges to be used in the fight against breast cancer. Flynn was in a group of 15 friends -- including former Olympic skating champ Peggy Fleming – that raised over $45,000 in the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer in San Francisco. That’s Flynn in the front row on the left; Fleming is fourth from the left in the same row.

(King has also served on the research staff of Berkeley Lab’s Environmental Energy Technologies Division and is a faculty senior scientist here). Full story.

 Policy Update

Government Computers
For Authorized Use Only

In a recent letter to DOE Secretary Spencer Abraham, U.S. Senators Dianne Feinstein, Orrin Hatch, Jon Kyl, and Patrick Leahy expressed the concern that "peer-to-peer file sharing allows for large scale copyright violations and the widespread presence of pornographic materials on taxpayer-purchased government computers, decreases productivity of government workers, and most importantly, puts sensitive government information at risk." Go here to read the letter. Employees are reminded that Lab computers and networks are only for authorized use, regardless of file-sharing methods. The policy can be found here.
