New Radio Tower
Will Strengthen Network

Construction was completed recently on a new 140-foot-high radio tower near Building 25. According to project manager Chuck Taberski, the free-standing all-steel tower will enable the Lab to implement a new, stronger radio system in 2004 as mandated by the Federal Communications Commission. The system serves facilities maintenance workers, Lab security forces, and building managers, and is a central component of the emergency preparedness plan. See this Friday’s Currents for more details.

Atkinson Praises Staff, Laments 'Difficult' Budget

Atkinson
University of Caifornia President Richard Atkinson, in his monthly message to University of California employees, praised the "impressive work, day in and day out," of faculty and staff in making the case for the state's investments in UC. Introducing the Our University update on the budget, Aktinson comments on the "extremely difficult" state budget for 2003-04. "In addition," he says, "the budget includes legislative intent language stating that UC can expect no funding for student enrollment growth in 2004-05 – meaning that we face the prospect of turning away UC-eligible students for the first time in memory." New UC President Rallies
Skill At Forging Consensus

By Carrie Sturrock

Dynes
LA JOLLA - Robert Dynes is about to assume one of academia's most powerful positions. Some, including his wife, express surprise that the internationally renowned scientist and chancellor of UC San Diego would want to take on the University of California presidency. When Dynes isn't running UC San Diego, he's deep into his disheveled physics lab in a quiet corner of campus researching the local oscillation of electrons within a superconductor and other esoterica that to nonscientists looks like chicken scratches on his blackboard. As president, he will largely give up the physics experiments he has squeezed into his chancellor's schedule for seven years. Full story.

Focus Groups To Review
Benefits Communications

Focus groups will be forming at each University of California campus and the three Department of Energy laboratories to review UC’s Human Resources and Benefits printed communication materials and the At Your Service Website. Berkeley Lab’s Benefits Office is seeking 15 to 20 volunteers to individually review the materials and to share their opinions, suggestions and recommendations with UC’s Office of the President. Most of the review will occur via e-mail, but conference call(s) and at least one “in-person” meeting also may be involved. Interested participants should e-mail Stacy Greene at slgreene@lbl.gov by Friday, Aug. 15.
