Biographical Sketch

Rowland M. Cannon is Staff Scientist and Project Leader, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, University of California, Berkeley, CA and was made Lecturer, in the Mat. Sci. & Min. Eng. Dept., Univ. of California - Berkeley, in 1987. Dr. Cannon received an S.B. in Materials Science, 1966, and an Sc.D. in Ceramics, 1975, both from MIT. Between degree programs he worked at AVCO Corp., Lowell MA. Afterwards he taught ceramics in the Materials Science and Engineering Dept. at MIT, becoming Associate Professor in 1980, before going to Berkeley in 1983. He has enjoyed half-year sabbatical periods at Case-Western Reserve Univ., in 1980, and at the Max-Planck Institute for Metals Research, Stuttgart, Germany, in 1990, and has been a visiting scientist at the MPI in the subsequent years. He has collaborated on research leading to about 100 scientific papers on topics that include sintering and microstructural evolution, mechanical properties, and interfaces. He has been conducting and directing research at LBNL on adherence of ceramic-metal interfaces, microstructures and interfaces for advanced ceramics, wetting, toughening mechanisms, and oxidation and reliable corrosion protection. He is a fellow of the American Ceramic Society from which he was awarded the Ross Coffin Purdy Award in 1991 (paper of the year) and the Sosman Memorial Lecture in 1997. He was made a fellow of the ACS in 1994. He has given 8 Gordon Conference lectures and was Chair of the Gordon Conference on Ceramics in 1993.
