Magna Cum Laude
EXPERIENCE
-
Research assistant for Prof. R. O. Ritchie, at University of California--Berkeley,
August 1993 - present. Doctoral dissertation involves a study of
fracture and fatigue-crack growth mechanisms of a nickel-based shape-memory
alloy, Nitinol, at 37°C (i.e., human body temperature). Industrial
interest in Nitinol includes manufacturing endovascular stents for supplementation
to current vascular surgery techniques. Master's thesis research
investigated the elevated temperature fatigue-crack growth and fracture
toughness behavior of gamma based titanium aluminide intermetallic alloys.
Of particular interest was the role of oxidation products in the crack
wake resulting in extrinsic shielding and increased fatigue-crack growth
resistance.
-
Research fellow for Prof. M. F. Ashby and Dr. D. Cebon, at University of
Cambridge, Cambridge ENGLAND, June - September 1995. Fracture and deformation
studies of bitumen and bituminous composites.
-
Research fellow for Prof. R. O. Ritchie, at University of California--Berkeley,
June - August 1992. Studied fracture toughness of ductile phase toughened
Nb/Nb3Al composites.
-
Graduate student instructor at University of California--Berkeley for undergraduate
course entitled "Mechanical Behavior of Materials", Fall 1994. Assisted
in preparing homework questions and exams, and grading. Lectured in the
absence of the primary instructor.
-
Research assistant for Prof. D. C. Van Aken at University of Michigan--Ann
Arbor, January 1992 - June 1993. Investigated internal friction of Al/Si
eutectic alloy with additions of Sr (submitted as undergraduate thesis).
Studied nitride strengthening mechanism in 201 series stainless steels.
Investigated damping behavior of shape memory alloy Cu-12Al-8Zn.
-
Summer Intern for Chrysler Corporation at Warren Stamping Plant, Warren,
MI, May - August 1991. Performed press and die capability studies to standardize
manufacturing process.
CONSULTING
Engineering consultant for several San Francisco Bay Area companies,
April 1995 - present. Work includes both experimental mechanical
behavior and electrochemical testing, and design consultations for improvement
of mechanical performance.
SKILLS
Experienced in metallography, optical microscopy, scanning and transmission
electron microscopy, x-ray diffraction and spectroscopy, Auger spectroscopy,
focused ion beam sputtering, corrosion polarization characterization, and
mechanical testing of materials (MTS and Instron controllers). Experience
preparing 201 stainless steel, Al-12Si, MoSi2
and gamma based TiAl transmission electron microscopy samples by using
electro-polishing and ion milling techniques. Experience casting and arc-melting
Al-12Si and Cu-12Al-8Zn shape memory alloy.
