Acknowledging MSD
The DOE Office of Basic Energy Sciences (BES) has provided a new set of guidelines for appropriately acknowledging BES support in publications and presentations based on BES-funded research.
Following are main points, and details/precise wording are HERE (PDF), but please do take care, as requirements are more detailed than they have been in the past. Err on the side of too much detail and contact PJFischer@lbl.gov to make sure everything is right prior to publication.
Research solely supported by a single grant from DOE-BES
- University Grants: “This work was supported by the U.S. Department of Energy, Office of Science, Basic Energy Sciences, under Award # [insert grant award number].”
- National Laboratory FWP projects: “This work was supported by the U.S. Department of Energy, Office of Science, Basic Energy Sciences, Materials Sciences and Engineering Division under Contract No. DE-AC02-05-CH11231 within the [insert program name here] program ([insert program award number here])"
Research solely supported by a single grant or FWP from DOE-BES, that includes coauthors supported by graduate student/postdoctoral merit-based award fellowships
- Acknowledgement should also indicate support of graduate students and/or postdoctoral researchers provided by personal fellowship awards.
- Example: “This work was supported by the U.S. Department of Energy, Office of Science, Basic Energy Sciences, Materials Sciences and Engineering Division under Contract No. DE-AC02-05-CH11231 within the [insert program name here] program ([insert program award number here]). G.H.I. acknowledges support through the Glenn Seaborg postdoctoral fellowship. J.K.L. acknowledges support from the DOE Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internship (SULI) program.”
Research solely supported by a single grant or FWP from DOE-BES that included work at a multi-user facility
- Publication should include appropriate acknowledgement of facility or instrumentation and its supporting agency.
- Example: “This work was supported by the U.S. Department of Energy, Office of Science, Basic Energy Sciences, Materials Sciences and Engineering Division under Contract No. DE-AC02-05-CH11231 within the [insert program name here] program ([insert program award number here]). Neutron scattering was carried out at the Spallation Neutron Source and High Flux Isotope Reactor which are supported by DOE, Office of Science, BES. Small-angle x-ray scattering work was carried out at UCSB-MRL which was supported by the NSF-MRSEC program.”
Research supported by Berkeley Lab Laboratory Directed Research and Development (LDRD) Program
- "This work was supported by the Laboratory Directed Research and Development Program of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory under U.S. Department of Energy Contract No. DE-AC02-05CH11231"
Research supported by Strategic Partnership Projects
- Make sure to confirm with the sponsor about any specific language that they may require.
- "This work was supported by [SPP Sponsor(s) Name(s)] through the U.S. Department of Energy under Contract No. DE-AC02-05CH11231"
Research supported by multiple funding sources.
- Clearly state which aspect of reported research was funded by DOE-BES and which other part of work was supported by each of the other acknowledged sponsors.
- Distinguish by scope/specific aspects of research; or by institution; or by individual.
- Example: “Research [insert “primarily” if appropriate and desired] supported by the U.S. Department of Energy, Office of Science, Basic Energy Sciences, Materials Sciences and Engineering Division under Contract No. DE-AC02-05-CH11231, under Award # [insert grant award number] (insert program name here), by the National Science Foundation (NSF) under Award # [insert grant award number] (insert program name here), and by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) under Award # [insert grant award number] (insert program name here).”
Multiple funding sources with distinction by institution (or investigator) combined with use of a multi-user facility
- Example: “This work at [insert name of Institution #1] is supported by the Office of Naval Research grant # [insert grant award number] and the work at the [insert name of Institution #2] is supported by the U.S. Department of Energy, Office of Science, Basic Energy Sciences, Materials Sciences and Engineering Division under Contract No. DE-AC02-05-CH11231 under Award # [insert grant award number]. Transmission electron microscopy was performed at the Northwestern University’s NUANCE Center which is supported by NSF-NSEC [insert grant award number], NSF-MRSEC [insert grant award number], the Keck Foundation, the State of Illinois, and Northwestern University. The National Institute of Standards and Technology, U.S. Department of Commerce, provided the neutron research facilities; the SPINS spectrometer is supported in part by NSF under Agreement No. [insert agreement number].”
