The celebration of Dr. Steven Chu’s 60th birthday will take place in Berkeley on Saturday, August 30, 2008, with an all-day scientific symposium and banquet dinner featuring keynote speakers Professor Emeritus Eugene Commins and Nobel Laureate William D. Phillips.
The Scientific Symposium—LBNL, Building 50 Auditorium
The symposium will feature a series of 20--30-minute talks and presentations by some of the world's most distinguished scientists and several Nobel laureates in Atomic, Molecular and Optical Physics, Biophysics and Energy Science. Light breakfast, boxed lunch, and refreshments will be available.
The Reception and Banquet Dinner—The Claremont Resort
Following the symposium, a reception and banquet dinner will be held at the Claremont Resort and Spa, which is located at 41 Tunnel Road, in Berkeley, California.
Because traffic and parking may be difficult, please take advantage of the free shuttle buses that will be available for transportation from LBNL to the Claremont Resort (and back).
Sunday Brunch—The Claremont Resort
Dr. and Mrs. Chu will be hosting brunch for all out-of-town guests on Sunday morning, August 31, from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., at the Claremont Resort.
Hotels
All symposium attendees who need overnight accommodations should make their own arrangements. For the convenience of attendees, a block of rooms has been reserved at a discounted rate at the Claremont Resort through July 30, 2008. The hotel deadline has passed, however rooms may still be available. Please call Reservations at 1 (800) 551-7266, and mention that you missed the deadline but are attending the LBNL/Chu Symposium and Dinner. The negotiated rate for a run-of-the-house guest room at the Claremont is $159 per night, not including taxes or resort fees.

Please note that the UC Berkeley football team will be hosting Michigan State the afternoon of August 30. Traffic in the area will be congested, so please avoid Gayley Road near the California Memorial Stadium. To avoid traffic around the Stadium, follow Hearst Avenue along the northern edge of the UC Berkeley campus.

- Please be prepared to show photo ID when you come through the Blackberry Gate entrance (off Gayley Rd. and Hearst Ave.).
- While Lab parking is open on weekends, reserved lots will be available for the attendees' convenience. You will be directed and receive a map when you enter Blackberry Gate.
- *REMINDER*: The season opening Cal football game begins at 5:00 PM: the area will be heavily impacted with traffic and road closures.

- Boxed lunch will be served under a tent in the lot adjacent to the Auditorium.

- Forecast for Saturday: Sunshine. Highs in the low 80s and lows in the upper 50s. Please dress accordingly and note: the LBNL Auditorium is not air-conditioned. The rooms at the Claremont are air-conditioned.
