The IsoSpin Laboratory could help expand the number of different atomic nuclei available for study and possible exploitation from approximately 270 to more than 5,000, creating an entirely new field of nuclear physics. The chart shows all known elements and isotopes between hydrogen and uranium. The number of protons is plotted on the vertical axis, neutrons are plotted horizontally. Every isotope has a unique number of protons and neutrons. The black solid boxes represent the about 200 stable istotopes found in nature; many of which have been accelerated in the SuperHILAC, 88-inch Cyclotron, and the Bevelac. The proposed IsoSpin Laboratory will also accelerate the radioactive isotopes shown in color and increase the number of available beams to about 2000.
