The terrible events of September
11 ushered in a new awareness of the need for vigilance in protecting
our nation from terrorist threats. We must especially guard
against attempts to smuggle radioactive material into the U.S.
via our airports and seaports. This past year, Berkeley Lab
engineers contributed to homeland security by helping to develop
a hand-held, extremely sensitive detector called "Cryo3"
which can locate and identify the photons emitted from radioactive
isotopes. Another team developed a portable device that uses
neutrons to detect both radioactive and explosive materials. |
