The California energy crisis and the severe droughts in much of the nation's farmbelt this past summer, along with headlines about shrinking polar ice caps, serve as harsh reminders of the continuing importance of energy and environmental research. At Berkeley Lab, a significant step was taken this past year towards reducing electrical power consumption in the home while at the same time improving lighting, with the development of a remarkable new high-performance, energy-efficient table lamp. Berkeley Lab researchers also made significant advances in addressing the uncertainties of the global carbon cycle. This past year, they launched deep-diving robots into the frigid Southern Ocean waters off Antarctica to monitor the response of plankton to iron fertilization.
