n 1998, Gerald Rubin, professor of genetics at the University of California at Berkeley and head of the Berkeley Drosophila Genome Project (BDGP), was approached by J. Craig Venter, president of Celera Genomics in Rockville, Maryland. Venter wanted to collaborate with the BDGP in an attempt to sequence the fruit fly genome in record time.
