Alex Pines was born in 1945, the same year that NMR was discovered. A native of Rhodesia, now known as Zimbabwe, he grew up with a passion for music and chess as well as science. Following degrees from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and MIT, he worked with NMR pioneer John Waugh and helped open the door to the modern era of solid-state NMR spectroscopy. Pines' influence is guaranteed to continue in the work of the many graduate students that have passed through his laboratory. In addition to being one of the preeminent researchers in NMR, he is a renowned teacher of freshman chemistry at UC Berkeley. |
