he Department of Energy is the principal source of funds to operate Ernest Orlando Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. Additional funds come from government agencies, such as the National Institutes of Health and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, or private companies, universities, and other federal laboratories. The Laboratory employs a staff of about 3,300 people, a portion of whom are faculty and students, primarily from UC Berkeley. Berkeley Lab provides research opportunities to nearly 1,800 guest scientists each year. In addition, approximately 50,000 guests visit the Laboratory each year.
