The Department of Energy is the principal source of funds to operate Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory. Additional funds come from private companies, universities, other federal laboratories, or government agencies such as the National Institutes of Health and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. The Laboratory employs a staff of about 3400 people, a portion of whom are faculty and students, primarily from UC Berkeley. LBL provides research opportunities to nearly 1800 guest scientists a year.
