The
Sudbury Neutrino Observatory (SNO), shown in the artist's
conception above, was built 6,800 feet underground in
a working nickel mine in Ontario, Canada. The detector
is immersed in light (normal) water within a 10-story-high
barrel-shaped rock cavity. Located in the deepest part
of the mine, the overburden of rock shields the detector
from cosmic rays. .
