Group Leaders/Supervisors

  • Supervision is a big issue in different parts of Lab
  • Many do not work day-to-day with employees as they are matrixed to other divisions
  • Official supervisors are still responsible for making Lab info know to employees
  • Committee may want to develop a Memo of Understanding regarding day-to-day supervision

Action Item:  Matt to send Kathie a copy of Memo of Understanding

Physics Safety Website

  • Encourage people to look at website
  • Set up a counter to see number of visitors
  • Develop a quiz based on safety issues in Physics.  Have quiz direct employees to website for answers.
  • Should info from HEAR database and other safety documents regarding lab projects be posted on website?  Yes, this may be helpful.

Action Item:  Maurice to send Kathie a copy of a similar quiz

Safety Inspections

  • Schedule - Every Monday @ 10am.  Meet at Kathie's office.
  • Each inspection should last no longer than an hour.
  • Most labs seem to be in order.
  • Rich Kuiper's machine shop to be inspected sometime in the Spring.
  • There is a Lab concern that machine shops are not being kept up and organized.

Other Committee Issues

  • Remind everyone to include ALL docs when submitting Activity Hazard Documents (AHD).
  • Currently working on a more dependable Laser Safety Program
  • Bicycle policy being looked into due to high number of bicycle accidents.  Lots of discussion by bike riders regarding poor pavement conditions.
  • Oakland DOE office shutting down.  Shutdown should be complete by May 2003.  This should not affect LBNL too much.  Support from Oakland office will come through Chicago office.
