Life Sciences
- Life Sciences Division
The Life Sciences Division advances the knowledge of biological processes by investigating
mechanisms as intricate as gene expression and the linkage of DNA sequence with biological
structure and function. The Division includes the following departments: Cell &
Molecular Biology, Environmental Biology, Molecular & Nuclear Medicine, Radiation
Biology, Subcellular Structure, Genome Sciences, Human Genome Sequencing and Drosophila
Genome Sequencing.
- DOE Joint Genome Institute (JGI)
The JGI, located in Walnut Creek, California, is a facility that merges the efforts of
Berkeley Lab, Lawrence Livermore and Los Alamos national laboratories into one
organization.
- The National Tritium Labelling Facility
The National Tritium Labelling Facility (NTLF) is a National Institutes of Health Research
Resource located here. Its role is to conduct research and to supply education and tritium
labelling support for biomedical researchers in North America.
- Carcinogenic Potency Database Project
(CPDB)
The Carcinogenic Potency Database (CPDB) is a widely used resource on the results of
chronic, long-term animal cancer tests. Analyses of 5000 experiments on 1230 chemicals are
presented. Both qualitative and quantitative information on positive and negative
experiments are given, including all bioassays from the National Cancer Institute/National
Toxicology Program.
- Center for Functional Imaging (CFI)
The Center for Functional Imaging develops mathematical 3-D image reconstruction
strategies, radiopharmaceuticals, and advanced medical imaging technologies including
positron emission tomography (PET), single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT),
and nuclear magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and applies them to the study of
atherosclerosis, heart disease, aging, neurological and psychiatric diseases, and cancer.
- Comprehensive Epidemiologic Data
Resource (CEDR)
The DOE CEDR program's mission is to enhance DOE's epidemiologic research by facilitating
independent research to validate and supplement DOE research on health effects associated
with working at or living near facilities involved with DOE or other energy production
facilities.
- Human Genome Program (HGP) Field Operations Office
The Field Operations Office assists the management of the DOE Human Genome Program in the
coordination and evaluation of the progress and impact of program research.
- Human Mammary Cell Resources
Human mammary cell resources developed in the laboratory of Dr. Martha Stampfer are being
offered for distribution.
