New Record for Laser-
Wakefield Acceleration

A precedent- shattering demonstration of the potential of laser-wakefield acceleration, conducted by scientists at Berkeley Lab, working with colleagues at the University of Oxford, has accelerated electron beams to energies exceeding a billion electron volts (1 GeV) in a distance of just 3.3 centimeters. The researchers report their results in the October issue of Nature Physics . This is only the first step, says Wim Leemans of the Lab's Accelerator and Fusion Research Division. "Billion-electron-volt beams from laser-wakefield accelerators open the way to very compact high-energy experiments and superbright free-electron lasers." Full story.

Radiological Attack
Defense Study Funded

Kenneth Raymond, with the Lab's Chemical Sciences Division, is the recipient of a nearly $1 million grant from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. As principal investigator, he will lead a program to develop new agents for large-scale radiological treatment of humans, such as in the aftermath of a "dirty bomb" attack. The grant is one of five awards announced under the federal government's Project Bioshield. Full story.

Seeks New Members

The American Association of University Women's Educational Foundation Board of Directors seeks two additional members for appointment to its Research Advisory Council. The council provides ideas and feedback on current and future plans for research, develops new relationships and networks in the broader research community, and serves as the review panel for the University Scholar-in- Residence program. Blackberry Gate Shuts
Down This Saturday

Blackberry Gate will be closed from 7 a.m. this Saturday to 7 a.m. Sunday to both inbound and outbound traffic to accommodate road-paving work. During this time, both Strawberry and Grizzly Gates will be available for exiting the Lab, but only Strawberry Gate will be open to incoming traffic. Pedestrians can still use Blackberry Gate via the sidewalk, and bicyclists can use Blackberry Gate by walking their bike on the sidewalk. Intervention Averts
Possible Accident

Recently, Wayne Greenway of the Engineering Division helped avoid a possible accident when he asked a contractor to stop working in an unsafe manner. The contractor was working approximately 15 feet above the ground with no fall protection on a crane that wasn't locked out at Building 58. If the crane had been inadvertently activated, the contractor could have been hit by the crane's wheels or pushed off the girder by the moving bridge. After assessing the hazards — working without fall protection on an active crane — Greenway told the contractor to stop work immediately. The incident reveals how the Lab's culture of safety, and specifically the notion that safety is everyone's responsibility, helps avoid accidents and makes the Lab a safer place.

Lab Prohibits Skates, Scooters, Skateboards

Because of the Lab's steep terrain, employees are reminded that the use of skateboards, scooters (manually powered), and in-line skates is prohibited. Use of these modes of transportation on the Hill increases the risk of injury.
