Quark Matter 2004 - First Announcement
The Seventeenth International Conference on Ultra-Relativistic Nucleus-Nucleus Collisions (Quark Matter 2004) will take place at Oakland, California on January 11 - 17, 2004. The location of the conference will be at the Oakland Marriott City Center in downtown Oakland. The conference will include a one day symposium for students on January 11, five days of conference talks, and an option for a half day excursion.
The scientific program of the conference will include the following topics:
- New Results from p+p, p(d)+A and A+A Collisions
- Nuclear Stopping and Collective Transverse Dynamics
- Jets, Jet Correlations, and Jet Quenching
- Hadron Correlations and Fluctuations
- Strangeness and Heavy Flavor Production
- QCD at High Temperature and Density
- Astrophysical Aspects of Quark Matter
- New Theoretical Developments
- Future Experiments and Facilities

Hotel Accommodations
The conference hotel is the Oakland Marriott City Center, situated within the Conference Center Complex. The conference center is contains a BART stop and is easily accessible by public transit. The rates are $126.00 for single or double occupancy. Information on alternate hotels near by will be available on the web page. About Oakland
Oakland offers world-class arts and entertainment, top-flight restaurants as well as several museums and historic sites. Oakland itself is centrally located in the San Francisco Bay Area with good public transportation available. Other tourist attractions, such as the city of San Francisco, the California wine country and the central California Coast are within easy reach. The weather in the Bay Area in January is unpredictable. Be prepared to encounter sunny weather in the 70 Fahrenheit (20 C) degree range, extended rain showers, or clear days with temperatures just above freezing.
Fellowships
There will be support for a limited number of students. Applications should be made via the registration web link. Students are also strongly encouraged to participate in the pre-conference student program on January 11, 2004.
Visa Information
It can be very time consuming for participants from some countries to obtain proper travel papers. Please keep in mind that the visa application process could take up to six months in extreme cases. Apply early! If you need advice or assistance, please contact Lorri StClaire at QM2004@lbl.gov. The conference will provide supporting documentation for visa applications upon request.
