Hiring a Term Employee


Incumbents in term appointments are individuals who are employed to work on a specified project of clearly limited duration for six months or more. If the initial appointment is between six and twelve months, the individual must be on a fixed 100% schedule. If the initial appointment is one year or more, the appointment must be fixed at 50% time or more. An incumbent in a term appointment must be terminated or converted to a career appointment at the end of five years of cumulative employment in a term position. All time in term appointments, regardless of a break in service, counts towards the five-year maximum. Term employees do not serve a probationary period, unless the initial appointment is for longer than one year.
